  • Never in my life been to 7945 Caldwell, Whittier, California.

However, some of the happiest, deepest, child-into-adult-chrysalis moments of my youth were at the UU Whittier, in the Rev. Richard Weston years, while I was a student at WC (class of '70). We were at this magnificent building on Wardman and Bright.

Then, our minister moved on and, our membership and resources having dwindled, we moved from the building, selling it to someone who wanted to put up a parking lot. I graduated and lost connection with the people I loved there.

I had first discovered the UU through a notice in the QC (Quaker Campus, WC student paper). I learned that this place called the Unitarian Universalist Church was having a rock service, but when I got there, a man in longish hair, a black suit and a colorful tie that was hand-made by his artist/wife Ann announced that the band had disbanded the night before, so he would do some of his poetry instead.

    It became my third home.

Dick encouraged us to lead our own Sunday services, and I did a few, discovering my voice. I avoided all political activities. (My fellow activist/friends now find it amusing that I was fervently anti-political back then during the Civil Rights and anti-war years). But we did sensory awareness sessions as well as workshops in self-expression through music, dance, art and poetry.

In one of my last experiences there, just before we lost the building, I went up one night to the balcony and sat there, sadly blowing bubbles over the edge, watching the LRY (Liberal Religious Youth) gather down below. A young man with long hair looked up into the barely lit balcony, spoke with me, then scaled the balcony to meet me – actually shinnying up the pillar.

    Where are those people now?

  • @Carolfrances Likins -- I remember that building. This was my childhood Sunday hangout, with my 3 siblings, most of the '60s before we moved to Huntington Beach in 1972.. Do you remember my mom Barbara Haffner? Would love to hear from you.
